Beijing has deployed tens of thousands of troops to the affected areas to lead the rescue work.

A huge rock was dislodged by an aftershock in the Mianyang area. The quake itself struck on Monday afternoon.

So far, the official death toll is 12,000, but it is expected to go up.

Because of strong aftershocks, people do not want to return to their homes, and are preparing to spend another night in the open, in heavy rain, with no power or water.

Dazed survivors stick to the streets, trying to make sense of the disaster.
