TORONTO -An arrest has been made in the murder of a York University student, police announced late Wednesday afternoon as her parents arrived in Toronto from China to claim her body.

Police chargedBrian Dickson, 29, of Toronto, with first-degree murder in connection to death of Qian "Necole" Liu.

The 23-year-old was found dead last Friday in her basement apartment, just off campus.

Police have said that Liu was talking to a friend in China via webcam when someone knocked on her door.

The friend watched as Liu let a man into her room. A struggle ensued, and the intruder shut Liu's laptop.

Liu's friend, however, was able to get a look at her attacker.

While friends of Liu have said she was being stalked by a rejected admirer, police have not confirmed this.

The laptop was missing when police found her body.

Dickson is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.

Police appealed to the media not to release the accused's photo.

Meanwhile, Liu's parents arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport Wednesday and were whisked away by members of the Beijing Association and others.

As they left, the victim's father briefly spoke to the horde of media awaiting their arrival.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have been so helpful," Jianhui Liu said in Chinese.

The parents sent their daughter here to school in September.

"She was interested in media and wanted to study for an MA in it. She already applied for several universities in Toronto and elsewhere including the University of Windsor," he said.
"After hearing the news about Liu Qian, our family and friends were all very worried. But we were praying for the possibility that the victim was a different person with the same name ... soon we found that we could no longer reach my daughter. Then the Canadian police made it quite clear that it was indeed my daughter."

Toronto police have arrested a man and charged him with first-degree murder in the death of a foreign student studying at York University.

On Wednesday afternoon police held a hastily called news conference to announce they have taken 29-year-old Brian Dickson of Toronto into custody and charged him with the slaying of Qian Liu.

Liu, 23, was found dead April 15 in her basement apartment near the campus.

She had been engaged in an online video chat with her boyfriend, who lives in China, at about 1 a.m. ET Friday when there was a knock on her door. She opened her door to a man and a struggle ensued.

Liu's body was found in the apartment later that morning after police were notified by Canadian friends of her boyfriend.

Until Wednesday afternoon police refused to rule the death a homicide, insisting instead the death was "suspicious."

An autopsy did not show a cause of death and investigators provided no details at the news conference to illuminate why they now think Liu's death was a homicide.

Dickson is scheduled to make court appearance on Thursday morning.

The arrest comes as the young woman's father arrived in Toronto.

多伦多警方18日发出新闻通告，证实约克大学女尸命案的死者，是来自中国北京的23岁留学生柳乾(译音，Qian Liu)。这一消息与早前网路上流传的死者姓名「柳乾」完全相同。

据柳乾的室友Milk说，住在同栋独立屋内的一名白人男子一直在追求柳乾，但屡遭拒绝。Milk还将自己电脑里柳乾的照片，以及他认为可能是疑犯的照片展示给记者看，但他的电脑後来被警方拿去调查。


警方指，死者在被发现时已是当日上午11时，当时其腰部以下的衣服被撤去，下身赤裸伏尸土库内，死亡时间约有十个小时。验尸结果显示，死者身上并没有发现被性侵犯的痕迹。警方昨日继续在案发街区搜寻线索，并从同街另一幢镇屋取走一些证物，希望藉此找到更多与此案相关的蛛丝马迹。


上周五多伦多警方接到报警，随後在约克大学附近一独立屋土库发现女性尸体，具体位置是Keele St. 和Finch Ave.的Aldwinckle Heights 27号。目前，多伦多警方仍仅将该宗命案列为一宗非自然死亡案(Suspicious Death)处理。


目前，由於检查人员没有在尸体上发现足以致死的外伤，所以警方仍不能确认其死因。接下来，警方将等待中毒报告(toxicology reports)以及法医的验尸报告，看是否有其他原因导致其死亡。



在命案被揭发後，不少约大的学生登录网路论坛，有人还贴上死者的照片，以及死者在社交网站「人人网」内的个人资料。网页内显示死者叫柳乾，家乡北京海区，学校是北京城市学院。


据悉，案发时，柳乾正与其身在中国的男友於网上视频聊天，後应门声开门，门外男子说要借电话，之後两人发生争执，男子将电脑视频关掉。死者的男友感觉不妙，便通知其在中国的家人，也曾经辗转报警，但可惜为时已晚。


已与柳乾交往七年的男友事後接受警方越洋调查时表示，他并不认识进门的男子，但不确定死者是否认识他。该男子是一名白人，年龄在20至30岁之间，身高约6尺，体重在175至200磅之间，肌肉型身材，黄头发，其头发前面 乱，但後面梳理得整齐;事发时穿一件蓝色圆领T恤。

学校的环境不好，不封闭，学生素质差，

另据本地英文媒体680新闻台刚刚公布的信息：多伦多警方已经拘捕了一名29岁的多伦多居民，据信和柳乾的死亡有关。据悉，这名名叫迪克森(Brian Dickson)的男子已被警方控以一级谋杀(First-degree murder)的罪名。

多伦多凶案组博伊德警探(Inspector Edward Boyd )告诫公众和媒体，勿要公开迪克森的照片，这将会给警方的调查带来不利影响(it will compromise the investigation)。目前，警方暂时还不会回答任何关于迪克森的问题，仅透露他将在周四（4月21日）上午10：00于法庭过堂。约克大学发言人Janice Wells表示，Dickson不是约克大学的学生。

再据《国家邮报》报道，柳乾的双亲已于今日下午3点搭乘海南航空的航班从北京抵达多伦多，同行的还有一位中国领事馆的官员。柳父含泪表示，自己十分感谢人们如此关注爱女的案件，同时希望多伦多警方能够尽快查清此案。得知多伦多警方已经拘捕嫌犯的消息后，柳乾的双亲对媒体表示相信爱女已经安息。

今天下午早些时候，警方还正式发布了从事发现场失踪的笔记本电脑，摄像头及手机的寻物启事。

CTV网站报道说，柳乾在北京的男友对警方说，他相信他当时与柳乾视频聊天时进入其房间的白人男子，就是曾经追求柳乾但遭其多次拒绝的男子。

柳乾的男友说，他和柳乾的网上交谈被进入其房间的男子打断，时间大概是多伦多时间凌晨1点左右。尽管中文媒体称其男友名叫孟小超(Meng Xiaochao)，但他要求警方不透露自己的姓名(为叙述方便，以下暂用孟小超的名字)。

对于加拿大警方仍然没有确认柳乾的死因，她在中国的家人感觉不理解。柳乾的叔叔柳建良(Jianliang Liu;音译)表示，柳家上上下下悲痛不已，也对迟迟没有(关于死因)结果颇为失望，“在如今科技高度发达的现代社会，不应该这么长时间还拿不出个检验结果。”
